The memorial service is not about your father. If you are lucky it will be given by an elder who knew him well and is willing to talk about him as a person. However the memorial service is just an excuse for them to preach their religion and the person is very much overlooked. The time is deliberately short to prevent the elder straying from the approved text.

I have been to some memorial services that the elder given the talk got the deseased name or personal info wrong or you can tell they just read it off a piece of paper. When it comes to their sales pitch they know that BS off by heart.

I would like to say one thing too the WBTS GB, how can you f%^$# people live with yourselves? To take abdvantage of a persons grief is the lowest of the low. I know after the first 5 minutes when they get into their sales pitch, I will be turning off my brain.

Just had a shep visit

they just left.

we had a nice "encouraging" chat about my inactivity.

they went through the usual guilt routine, that didnt seem to work so they turned to fear.

The one guy was trying really hard to relate to me, while the other one was getting frustrated that i wouldnt see things his way.

I agree that there is some good elders that genuinely care but the bottom line is their first priority is to "protect the congregation spirituality" and if they think you can be a poisonous influence to the other members of the congregation their first priority is the congregation.

I did one for him already and hopefully play it after the service. Just irritates me that you are not allowed to grieve and pay tributes in your own way. It should be what the family wants not what the WTS wants.

Also I was asked to do the write up in the newspaper obituary and I wanted to say "celebration of my -------- life" and was told that was not approved by the WTS. I don't give a rats a$$ what they are celebrating or trying to push I am celebrating my fathers life.

Although I don't like it when they do this at weddings but I can accept that more than them taking advantage of peoples vulnerable state of mind in their time of grief. It is the lowest of the low and here I always thought undertakers were pretty low.

I know we have had discussions on here about this topic in the past. My elderly father died some time ago. When it came to his memorial service I asked if I could put together a video tribute to him. The answer was that they do not allow personal tributes or translated "Big Brother" does not approve of anything that has not being approved by them. I guess that will take away from their 30 minutes of a preach fest. Is a memorial service supposed to be about the person? I just think it is just a cheap tactic to use this time of grief to try and win converts to their cult.

James Beverley's book on Penton's expulsion now on Abebooks

"crisis of allegiance" is a slim, but excellent book written by a professor of religion on the events in lethbridge, alberta, around 1981, that led to the expulsion of jim penton, a jw who believed he was anointed but also happened to think the wts had some doctrines wrong.. it's a great read that ties in quite closely with the campaign to get rid of ray franz, showing the dirty tricks used by the society to rid themselves of someone who dared to question them.

penton was an academic who the society loved when he wrote a book on their human rights legal challenges ... but when he expanded his research and decided to do a book on their history, pow!

they began regarding him with great suspicion.

industry observers say the changes could have implications for millions of other workers, as more companies on the fence could replicate its moves.. the discounter, which employs more than 1.4 million workers, said the changes were forced by rising health care costs.

Makes me feel old when sone of the GB is around my age. So what happened to their porphecy that the generation that seen 1914 would not pass away? Growing up we were told that generation would still be alive and in charge after armageddon. That was written in Freddie's books.
